Austin looking at contract extension?
Rumors on social media are Teryl Austin is looking at an extension to remain the defensive coordinator going into the future. Fans are split on this possible extension and for good reason. Austin hasn’t been spectacular after becoming the defensive coordinator, not that he has been bad, but our defense isn’t the Steelers defense of several years ago. Some blame can be put on injuries, but every team deals with this issue. We also need to find a way to be able to win without TJ Watt. Watt is as tough as they come and my opinion the best defensive player in football, Micah Parsons can go pound salt 😉 How TJ plays he misses games here and there and we miss him tremendously, and rightfully so, but we need to adjust our defense to win without him. Heyward is aging and can’t always play every down like he used to, so much needed help needs to be on the way. Some could be already on roster with guys like Herbig on the edge and Benton in the middle who showed he can be a great starting DT in our defense.
The question lies can Austin be an elite coordinator? Some on social media pointed out that when Fitzpatrick was injured last season, he changed Austin’s call from the sidelines and even forced a timeout after intense conversation with Austin and Fitzpatrick happened on the sideline. Consistency is a key and if Austin can evolve some and lead this defense he deserves a shot at sticking around.
